Hi Thank you for reading my post. how we can sort IT books (specially java books) publishers? which publisher can be considered the best publisher and which one the weakest publisher? If you were asked to rank them from 9 to 0 what is your score for the following publishers?
APress OReilly Manning Prentice Hall Packt McGrow Hill Springer Addison wesley ....
I don't think that ranking by publisher is meaningful or useful. Each has strong titles, and each has their weaker titles. Even within books by the same author, you might find some great books and some flops. [ September 08, 2008: Message edited by: Bear Bibeault ]
Thank you for the link, it was very interesting. I am wondering why there is no name of Manning in the article. I always thought Manning is the biggest java books publisher.
thanks

Manning is being counted in the O'Reilly numbers, because these days O'Reilly does distribution for Manning. You'll see the Manning name broken out in some of the pie charts.
The biggest IT imprint is, not surprisingly, "For Dummies."
One thing I found most interesting was the count of average sales:
It's hard to believe that some publishers, on average, only sell 239 0r 294 books per year per title. I thought I was floundering with 500 books sold a year. Perhaps I'm doing better than I thought!

A lot of IT books are duds; some publishers definitely use a "throw it at the wall and see if it sticks" approach, cranking out an enormous array of titles every year.
