Video Course Craig Larman

Hi ,
I came to know about a video course for the book applying uml and patters by craig larman ? has anyone tried it out. the reviews on amazon.com didnt say much about them so i was wondering if anyone is this group had a feel for it

I'm reading the book and it is worth while. The reports on the package you are referring to are unfavourable.
A new edition of this book is also imminent.

The video course consists of two tapes in VHS format (sorry, no Betamax ) and the book. In the course, Craig Larman goes through key sections of the book. The questions on the companion website are actually based on the video course presentation. The presentation is pretty dry but it helps you get through the book because Larman makes references to it a lot in the presentation. If you are the type that needs help getting motivated to go through a book, then you might find the video course worth the money.

I would suggest you wait for the new edition of this book which is due by the end of this month or early next month.

Also,I would like to mention that there are some errors in the present edition of the book.I have written to Larman about it.I will keep you informed, if I happen to recieve any mails from him.

Hi ,
I did buy the video ( i had the book already) and i liked it a lot . firstly because i feel that i have a mentor and its more classroom style you see the lecture and read it answer the question and see some more and go on . it is definetly a motivation to read the book especially part by part and also it allows one to remember the concepts well . it is especially good for a quick revision as it takes a hell lot to read a 400 pages twice or thrice. but a 3 hour video is no pain to watch at all and gives u a quick feed back ..

Rahul,
The multimedia edition costs 130 USD compared to book edition which is about 50 USD?Is it worth to buy considering that the book edition already exists?
When I was preparing for Test 486, I found it difficult to finish with the book edition for the first and second time.However, the time I spent reading was especially very helpful.The third time when I read this book, I finished it in guess!!!-- just 4 hours!
There is one more thing which I would like to add.I believe you should spend a decent amount of time when you start off with Larman.I am not sure how much would sink in, if the whole material is presented to you for the first time in 4 hours or so.
I like the old way of studying.Work with the book edition for about a week.Supplement this with the exercises and the multimedia presentation available free on the web (link mentioned in my previous post!).Do this atleast a couple of times.This way you will not only save 50 USD but also grasp more!

P.S.:BTW, I was also following the same principle earlier of finishing the UML Guides faster. I purchased "The Complete UML Training Course" multimedia edition which is a combination of "UML Reference Guide" and "UML User Guide" by three amingos.It didn't benefit me at all.I switched over to the book edition and found it very useful.

the best way is to use a combination of both
it does not suggest that you see the whole video for 4 hours at all u see a section of it go and read the book
the old way is good but if you like the classroom style of teaching this is the best way to go totally , you listen to a lecture do some self studying.
and typically you can digest more what you see and listen right ?
and about saving 50$ its not really worth it . ask someone who has it and he can make a copy and give it to you for a small fee. ? you dont' have to buy it really ..
or just buy it make a copy and resell it on amazon that way you don't really loose a lot of money >>>>!!!

Just checked up at amazon.There seems to be different views about "The Complete UML Training Course" and "Applying UML and Patterns" multimedia edition.
The former was really pathetic.Yes, most of the time I like listening to the lecture, and you are also correct when you say you tend to learn and digest more in the classroom type of learning.But this is a fact only, if the lecturer is good.Buy "The Complete UML Training Course" and you would realize what I mean.
I purchased this multimedia for 129 USD and am still wondering why I rushed for it.It is not at all good; infact there are some errors while the narrator explains.Also, the diagrams for which considerable explanation is required is not proper.
The other multimedia edition that I purchased for VisualAge for Java - "The Ultimate VisualAge for Java Tutorial" by Bill Farell, for USD 69, is also pretty bad!
I think the best way is the old way of studying - at your own pace.
In any case, now that I have finished reading Larman 3 times, I donot require the multimedia edition.

I finished this book in 4 hours ONLY after having read the book twice.I found going rather slow when I started with it - I believe it took more than a week and a half to finish the book for the first time!

Hi Todd,
was a good idea to resurrect thread. I think Desai is right: I won't buy the video if I allready have the book. There are so much thinks to learn with this OO/UML/Pattern. I would not buy the same content twice. Currently I am reading Shalloway/Trott: Design Patterns Explained and I like it.

But I will include the mock questions Desai was refering to as part of the second reading.

For me this was the most important piece of information of the thread. To have questions and solutions at the end of each chapter I think is a good motivation to read it thoroughly.

There is a 2nd edition of the book Applying UML/Patterns by Larman.
I do not think that there is a 2nd edition of the video yet though.
