Can we have a forum to discuss books coz. reading the appropriate book is important since someone else must have read it and give reviews about it. also slelcting a book takes a lot of asking other aobut it usefulness. this kind of forum will certainly help.

I would think that you would talk about servlet books in the servlet forum....
Have you looked at the bunkhouse?

Actually, I think that's a great idea. You could even set it up like a book-of-the-month forum.

I like the idea as well. Funny thing is, I was actually trying to do a search on the web last week to find such a place (without any luck).
Also, if you do set it up like the book of the month, you might be able to generate additional revenue, as you could urge people to buy the book through the links on JavaRanch (assuming they don't have it).
If you decide to do this Paul, let me know - I would be glad to help!

Its a popular thought you can see only success in this forum , since books also possess a big market such as java and other releated linux oops and many other, also would be benefical to user for more info about any books coz the field of computing involves many aspects not just java related.

Hmmmm,
Maybe we could make a books forum and for every book that gets reviewed, we could put the review as the start of a thread. In the forum, people are not allowed to post, but are allowed to reply.
How does this sound?
Angela, how does this idea strike you?

Sounds good to me! I'll moderate initially if you like but I'll have to give up my slot in Programmers Cert!

This could be great! I am finding it hard to keep my review down to 250 words because of my natural wordiness. With the forum, I could write a 2,000 word review!

Would there be some format for requesting a review ? If I want to inquire about a book that has not been reviewed how would I go about it ? I think the idea as a whole is teriffic.

paul,
Starting a new thread on a book reviewed would be still restricting other books to reviewed i.e on you would recomend. but a particular book which some one has in his mind won't be there. if you are worried about the amount of books present and thier relevance to the site , then i would suggest that for a new book to be recomended you can have to form where you can accept the books name and where and which criteria it fall in like oops, linux, java, but this again will increase your atttention towards checking the books and filtering and so on. Second option you can create the books formn and then sub-forumn those and be categorically arranged. Please do not have only java books in your mind or other releated to existing forms, this would again be restricting. I have been clicking for javaranch for the last 11 months and find the cowboys and cowgirls very intresting, and would like it to grow. I also have couple to ideas which i will post in this forumn.

Sounds good to me Paul. One often reads a review on a book. You buy the book and find that you dont quit agree with the reviewer.
In a forum like this you can post your opinion and so help other people with / in their decision before they buy it.

OK so if we were to take on this idea how does this sound.
A new topic will be started for every book currently reviewed in The Bunkhouse. Every time a new review is added to the bunkhouse an appropriate topic will open in the forum. Posters will be allowed to reply to topics but not start new ones ...
The Bunkhouse is about to get a new addition with a list of books not currently reviewed, you may have noticed that the Bunkhouse has been growing a lot lately and we aim to keep that going. the problem is at the moment we are restricted to Bartenders and Sheriffs as Reviewers for new books and have to wait for publishers to send the books on then wait for a review so just getting one book reviewed can be quite time consuming. However, if ANY one out there has already read a book that hasn't been reviewed you can e-mail your review to bookreviews@javaranch.com. If you are not a Bartender or Sheriff please make sure to let us know if you are a GreenHorn or RanchHand and we will add your review asap! Keep them to less than 250 words though!
The Bunkhouse is going to get REALLY big soon .. any suggestions for further improvements can be e-mailed to me since I'm kinda The Bunkhouse Manager (sounds better than librarian )bunkhouse@javaranch.com . There are currently two people (incl me) on the Bunkhouse team (plus all the reviewers)... that's about to grow to three .. maybe four. So you see a lot of effort is going into making The Bunkhouse great!
As for a forum .. well it may well add to The Bunkhouse's success. I for one support the idea but would ask for a little patience. I think the most appropriate time to start it up is in a couple of weeks when I and my team have completed overhauling the Bunkhouse and we have it running smoothly. Then we can add maintaining the forum onto our list of priorities.

As you are changing the bunkhouse anyway, may I make the folowing suggestion Angela ?
That the Bunkhouse also allocates a rating for the books reviewed. Something like the star rating that Amazon does.
Say 5 mooses indicates a must have book etc.
This rating can change depending in the replies in the new forum.
Or a double rating can be shown.
The first one shows the rating the reviewer gave the book and the other one indicates how the "rangers" voted. All registered users get 1 vote, you vote by replying to the topic and you give the number of mooses you allocate to the book.
The reviewer then edits the reply to indicate that the vote has been taken in account for the avrage.
I know its a lot of extra work. But at least I for one will trust fellow rangers more than the odd person at amazon's rating.
Good luck with the "new" Bunkhouse & let me know if I can help.

a ratings system is already one of the new things planned ... initially we'll just have the reviewers ratings ... we'll think about adding other ratings if and when the forum appears.

No problem .. you're not psychic ... Here's a outline of the new things planned for the bunkhouse ... shoudl be fully implemented within two weeks.
1. Books will be rated by reviewers.
2. Books that havn't yet been reviewed will be listed with links to amazon.com ... books currently under review will be highlighted and moved into appropriate section when the review arrives with links added to Amazon.co.uk and Fatbrain.com.
3. The bunkhouse MAY be divided into yet more sections ... this depends on how bulky the pages get when the unreviewed books are added.
4. I'm currently playing around with a few new layout designs... may stick with what we have for now though ... need to think about that one.
5. whichever book is being given away in our weekly competition will be highlighted as such with a link to the appropriate forum!
So in about 2 weeks these SHOULD be implemented ... We're aiming to Hyper-Promote the Bunkhouse .. it's Javaranch's only source of income apart from Sponsership (We get a little bit of money everytime someone clicks on a link to Amazon or Fatbrain and buys the book) and keeps the site just about running in the black! So all suggestions and any reviews anyone wants to write are VERY welcome ...

hello Angela ,
you havent mentioned which kinda books you will be reviewing, coz you will only review books that you and your reviewer's have in mind or the publisher gives you. But you should allow javaranch user to post for books discussion and then limit the size of words. This saves you the time for books to be reviewed and place a link in each thread to any of the books sites (amazon). I would suggest not to limit the thread to books reviewed.

Books reviewed will remain much around the same topics as books already in the Bunkhouse. (For now) I'll consider what limitations to put on the forum if and when we get it going.
