1:Is there any pre-requisite for certification.
2: Does i am able to start preparation of certification.
3:Which book is the best book to start for cetification preparation.(Remember i am layman in UML)
4:How much time(average time) required for preparation.

Welcome to Javaranch Vikrama,
Here, some links I suggest you start. Please, ask again if you have problem.
IBM certification page http://www-4.ibm.com/software/ad/certify/des486a.html
Links from Cetus page http://www.cetus-links.org/oo_uml.html
Books
1) Design Patterns by Erich Gamma, et all.
2) UML Distilled by Martin Fowle. The first book about UML.
3) Applying UML and Patterns: An Introduction to Object-Oriented Analysis and Design by Craig Larman.
Cheers,
Adrian

I suggest you keep cool and study the books and don't keep the exam in mind and then you are done.

Hi Viki,
Start with Larman's books first and follow it up with Martin's book.Supplement your reading with the books written by Three Amingos.Keep the preparation time of 3-4 months, if you are new to OOAD with UML.
Hope this helps,
Sandeep

Hi Viki,
You should go with the latest edition.Although, I donot have it personally, I have heard lots of positive comments for the new edition.

I have Larman's 1998 ed. Is it very much out of date - or will it suffice for the test? I would rather not have to buy the new one just yet.

Jyotsna,
The IBM 486 exam was done BEFORE the 2nd edition was published, so I am happy with the 1st edition. I bought the first edition despite the fact that I knew ahead of time that a 2nd edition was coming because I did not want to postpone my review. I doubt that one will get a higher mark because one has the newer edition.
If you have the 1st edition, I can see no reason for you to buy the 2nd edition unless you're a really big Larman fan. If I were you I would instead buy another UML book e.g. Meiler Pager Jones or the Use Case book by Kulak (excellent book).

Thanks Salvador
I had not heard of Kulak's book before so I just checked on Amazon - there are some good reviews. It might order this then!
And stick with my old Larman.
I have studied from ( but don't own) Cockburn's book which I liked as well as some Page-Jones but that was a while ago.
regards,
Jyotsna
