I need to create a function that would take an xml doc and then read a usb smart card (to retrieve digital certificate) - then output a doc with the digital siging and XaDes encrypted certificate from the smart card. Can anyone point me to some documentation to help with this project. Thanks in advance.

If not then you maybe need to check your JAVA_HOME and path settings in the environment settings.

Mike, when I started with Java , i found a thread here on setting your system up. I followed it, and all was good until I encountered the infamous Error 1937 or 1793 or whatever it was. Now, I cant find that thread or documentation about setting these things up - for example, what is the JAVA_HOME settings supposed to be and where is a good place to find those docs. Thanks much.

In Vista you go to the control panel, then you will see an extra java button.Click that then click the far right hand tab and you will see "Standard Java for Browser" and then a check box for IE, see if that is checked or not.
Not sure if that is the problem or not but maybe it will help.

Mike

Mike, here in W7, in the control panel, there is a icon for Java. However when I click it, I get "Application Not Found". ??

Thanks, I will give it a try. What do you use for your browser?

I use a combination of Firefox, Chrome, sometimes Safari, and IE6 when I must (for work only, IT only supports IE6 'cause internal apps don't work on other browsers).

I have my path statement in my autoexec.bat file, but when I restart w7, i cant use my java or javac commands until i manually execute my autoexec.bat file. Any ideas why?
And there is a setting somewhere I am supposed to setup for Java to run properly - I remember it from when I started on this java direction - Im sure thats the reason for these issues - do you have any ideas ? Thanks.

Where are settings for Java ?

The plugin is the bridge between the browser and JRE. My suggestion would be to visit www.java.com and do the install from inside IE - to make sure the plugin that installs is appropriate for your browser.

Thanks, I will give it a try. What do you use for your browser?

I don't know where it is in IE8, but somewhere there is a preferences menu that allows you to enable things like Java, Javascript, Flash, ActiveX, etc... You will need to find that menu item and make sure Java is enabled.

Thanks Steve - I installed the JDK that included the JRE - but how do I test to be sure it is installed. For example (running w7), when I go to the control panel , the Java icon is 'empty. When I go to an internet site that is laden with java applets, it displays, slowly, but it displays. When I run my java programs (java myprogram) , they run.

Am going to look for that preference menu now. And many thanks.

After the applet runs, a white box appears with 'error' I click on that and probably 20 seconds later a box appears with what appears to be helpful information, and then it closes - ?

I am running the SalutonApplet.html - that calls the app let - I get the You Need a java enabled browser to see this' message - I run IE 8, how do I make this Java enabled ?

Thanks in advance.

mike ryan wrote:Hey Don this is great news;) now you can start pulling your hair out learning Java

I think once i learn Java well i will create a program that fixes this problem with a few clicks, that would be a great thing!!!
and needed as well...if i will ever be good enough to do it? that is another question hehe!!

MIke, with your attitude toward helping, my money would be on you. I am going to try to document what I did and the order I did it in here so maybe I and possibly others can learn from this. One of the things I did different was I did not download and install the 64 bit jdk/jr - I installed the 32 bit. But then, it may have just been the phase of the moon, but I will report it anyway.

Thank you all so much, I think I may have it. Last night, I printed out all the responses and just walked through them retrying everything. I havent tried my java routines yet, the html ones with the java applets that alerted me to this problem, because logging on to my kids high school website became my test. There are tons of applets embedded in that site and I havent been able to get on it without lots of errors before - and now I can. But the final thing that I believe made the difference was re-running the Msicuu2.exe utiliity and probably when I ran it before, I was not in admin mode, and this time it pulled up and showed a browse box of installations and I was able to select the java routines - and remove them. Then I went to the kids high school site - and finally joy. So now, I am going to go back to my Java in 24 hours book, - oh and rewrite my path statement in autoexec. bat

path = c:\java\jdk1.6.0_21\bin;

to the new correct position, hopefully I wont need help with that , and then rock and roll time.

Again thanks to everyone - and I pray to God, you dont have to deal with this problem ever.

I told you to UseOneThreadPerQuestion before. So please stick to your old thread.

No you didnt. I have never heard from you before. If you want to make comments like this, be truthful.

I cleaned up and summarized what had occurred - and posted that information. Until today, everyone who had posted worked hard to share the experience that they had in
solving the problem on their computer and I greatly appreciate their comments, but I am still trying to remedy the problem on my system.

I need help. I am trying to get a clean install of Java - I got the 1723 error above "Error 1723. There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A DLL required for this install to complete could not be run. Contact your support personnel or package vendor."

I posted this earlier and got suggestions from others who had encountered this problem and some had solved it.

I have tried their suggestions except for removing the Windows Installer and updating it. What is the risks at doing this?

I am running Windows 7 / 64 bit.

Thanks very much.

Jesper de Jong wrote:Where exactly did you download your Java from?

The official download page is here: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/index.html

The most current release version at this moment is Java SE 6 update 23.

Note that there are also early access releases of Java 7, but that is not officially released yet (it will be released at the end of July 2011). Don't use Java 7 yet unless you just want to try out the newest features.

I am sorry - I didnt write very clearly, I meant the Windows Installer, not Java.

Ankit Tripathi wrote:First you have to know whether this problem is caused due to windows installer or java.
Try to install any program which uses windows installer if it is installed correctly then you have to have correct Java version designed for your platform system installed.
if it is not so->
- Go to Control Panel and click on Administrative Tools, then double click on Computer Management.
- Expand the Services & Applications menu item.
- Double-click Services.
- Double-click Windows Installer and stop the service.
- Launch regedit from run.
- Open HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSIServer.
- Select the MSIServer subkey.
- Delete this key value.
- Go to microsoft.com and re download the latest version of Windows Installer accoding to your operating system.

if program is installed successfully then you have to uninstall java and reinstall it according to platform you are using. To uninstall any older versions of Java, you can make use of JavaRA – a simple software that removes old, unnecessary and redundant versions of the Java Runtime Environment (JRE).
Here is a link-
javaRA
thinking it might help you or google for it!
then download the new version from java.sun.com.

Jankit, I just noticed that my version of the window installer 5.0 - I read somewhere that 4.5 was the most current, could I possibly have a bleeding edge beta product?
