Does it matter which version of the OS you'll need to develop for iPad? Is there an iPad simulator?

I've created a process where string parameters are passed to a web service using Apache Axis jar files. This works perfectly unless there's an apostrophe in one of the parameters then Axis gives an error (see error below). How can I fix this? I've tried to encode the string parameters and that works because fox example, I get "Benil%20O%27Brien." for a string parameter of "Benil O'Brien." But then it gets saved to SQL with the string still encoded.

If you are programming on Windows is there like an 'emulator' for mobile testing?

Mark, who can I talk to about a book I won last year called:

Hiring The Best Knowledge Workers, Techies & Nerds: The Secrets & Science of Hiring Technical People
by Johanna Rothman Dorset House Publishing

I have emailed several times to someone who had posted as the contact but noone got back to me. It was a book promotion in this Jobs thread.

Whether to upgrade is a very good question. In my case no. I wrote java code back when 1.2.2 was supported. I figure if it works leave it alone. The client for whom I wrote the code was within Lotus Domino app. So the third party software involvement back then did not even support the latest available at the time. I know there will be changes needed for an upgrade but would rather not break anything. Esp. since I hear this client will more than likely phase out Lotus Domino due to a merger with another company.

Yes, I know someone who has switched to project management from being a system administrator. She feels she will try it out and also supposedly the salary is higher.

Johanna, what about carrying business cards? Not that you are doing a business per say. But wouldn't it be helpful give contact information out? What do you think?

Yes, a Business Analyst position I observed once, did all three you mentioned; was the liaison, wrote functional specs, and designed the UI. People ask me what I do I've used all the following; programmer, developer, computer consultant, software developer, and others. Really above all I'm still a problem solver.

In consulting you really do need someone who can get up to speed or at least it would benefit the company because you need to be 'billable'. So far the new hires after myself in my company always start in the beginning to be in learning mode and not billable so it can vary from person to person. Some are not billable for some months.

I would assume a 'smarter' candidate would be someone well-rounded and able to roll with the punches, learn quick and get things done. Or defined as someone geeky and knows everything? And possibly have a gadzillion certifications? By the way did anyone mention certifications?

That's kind of what I was aking here as well:

Job Question

but I wasn't referring to entry level positions.

Johanna, is the book mostly about hiring managers to hire technical people? Is there mention of project managers/business analysts as well? Some companies have business analyst positions which generally require some years of technical experience and their job really is to manage projects between business operations and the IT dept who will actually create the product for them. Other companies have other job titles, I guess generically they are considered 'project managers'.

What happens if you get asked what your salary requirements are? And would it reflect poorly on you if you don't want to give it? I interviewed at a bank a while back (non technical position) and on the application I wrote a range. When they offered me a position, they offered the lowest number of that range. How does one navigate a touchy issue with hiring managers?

Johanna, I'm in consulting, so projects vary and time to time my skills may not match a particular project but you learn and get it done. My resume isn't updated yet but if it was, I would have worked on various technologies and only specialized on one. If I was targeting for a job which utilizes a different technology, would I be an unlikely candidate? What do hiring managers think when they see such a resume? Assuming that I am looking to work in IT/IS at a company (not a consulting company).

Johanna and Mike, thank you for your inputs. Unfortunately you never really know if you are being discriminated against unless you can pick up certain implications from hiring questions. In NYC since 2001, health insurance rates for companies have skyrocketed. Because our company is small I hear insuring women is higher than men for I guess some obvious reasons, women get pregnant and will require more visits to the doctor. That could be a factor in itself not to hire women. Do hiring companies think about these things?

This reminds me of one time I had to qualify for a technical position at a bank. They had a test that is given to all applicants regardless of what technical level or experience. I forgot the name of the test. There were I think 6 or 7 questions. Each question was as long to read as to figure out the solution. And if I remembered correctly there were no set answers. These were not specific to a language or technology. But I guess to determine some sort of aptitude. Has anyone taken such a test? Johanna, do you know what I'm referring to?
