I've downloaded Eclipse v3.2.1 for Windows and tried to run it on my home PC and laptop, and Eclipse doesn't work on either one.

What I've tried:
-reinstalled Java (JDK 6)
-checked and set path, classpath, and qtjava
-deleted the .lock file (recreated during every startup attempt)
-deleted eclipse.ini (not recreated during every startup attempt)

Upon startup I run into the exit code=1 error:

---------------------------
Eclipse
---------------------------
JVM terminated. Exit code=1
C:\WINDOWS\system32\javaw.exe
-jar C:\Program Files\eclipse\startup.jar
-os win32

-arch x86
-launcher C:\Program Files\eclipse\eclipse.exe
-name Eclipse
-showsplash 600
-exitdata 10a0_c8
-vm C:\WINDOWS\system32\javaw.exe
-vmargs
-jar C:\Program Files\eclipse\startup.jar
---------------------------

"AncientPC",

There aren't many rules that you need to worry about here on the Ranch, but one that we take very seriously regards the use of proper names. Please take a look at the JavaRanch Naming Policy and adjust your display name to match it.

In particular, your display name must be a first and a last name separated by a space character, and must not be obviously fictitious.

Thanks!

Try installing Java 1.5 or 1.4.

We'd rather you not "bump" either. Usually, if you don't get a prompt answer around here, it's because either no one knows the answer (it happens (: ) or you're asking for something ridiculous. And by ridiculous we don't mean "dumb questions" - we take pride in not being like many forums and getting all bent out of shape on "dumb" questions. We're here to answer "dumb" questions. I've even asked a few dumb questions of my own. Ridiculous means "Do my homework for me" and similar stuff. If you think it's "ridiculous", it probably is. Otherwise it almost certainly isn't and we'll defend your right to ask it.

So much for netiquette, JavaRanch Style. Welcome!

When you get the type of message you've posted, you've encountered a bug in the Java Virtual Machine. Eclipse doesn't blow up that way, nor does any other 100% pure Java program. So the solution is simply to find a more suitable JVM. Since Java was designed to allow multiple versions on a single computer, just download and install one - doesn't matter if it's a Sun JVM, an IBM JVM or whatever, though I recommend avoiding gcj, as it's not yet complete.

Once the new JVM is installed, point JAVA_HOME at it and fire up Eclipse. That's all it takes.
