I can't seem to find any documentation or sample code on how to use Ant directly in Java code. Does anyone know how or have a link to such documentation?

All the documentation you need comes with every distribution of Ant in the 'docs' folder. This includes the Ant API.
Check out the 'manual' sub folder in the 'docs' folder.

Thanks! For some reason, the copy of Ant I had did not include those docs.
