when maven and when ant?

Guys,

I recently came across about the build tool called maven. i have used ant in past for web development things. however, i dont understand exact differnce between two? can any body elaborate more on maven and when should i use it?

i have seen production test environment where product is built using maven and test results gets publieshed over continuum.
