To set path and classpath permanently

Hello

I am very new to linux and trying to run java and tomcat on linux. Now after installing jdk5 and tomcat5.5.9 I will set path and classpath for each and finally get both up and running.

Problem is that each time when I open terminal(shell) all the setting is lost and I have to define it again.

If anyone guide how to set all these thing permanently I am very thankful to him.

You will need something like, changing the directories to reflect your filesystem:

#PJR
export JAVA_HOME=/opt/jdk1.5.0_02
export CLASSPATH=$JAVA_HOME/lib/tools.jar:.:
export PATH=$PATH:$JAVA_HOME/bin:.:
                                                                                                                             

Depending of the faviour of linux you can either place this lot in, one of these files:
i) /etc/profile
ii) /etc/profile.local
iii) /etc/profile.d/java.sh (ie, create a new shell script)

These changes will then be system wide.
