Guys,

I purchased the Ubuntu 7.04 version CD from a vendor and I tried installing it on my system which already runs windows xp prof and fedora 5. There are actually 4 drives on my system out of which windows is on C, fedora on E. Now, when I played the Ubuntu CD, I thought it will by default take the already created Linux partition on which Fedora is running, format it and install Ubuntu but it just ran from the CD. Kindly help me on how to get this installed by replacing Fedora??

If you don't get an "install Ubuntu" menu option when you boot - and you may not (I forget) - then login as a Ubuntu user and see if you can't find an Install to hard disk option. The Ubuntu install CD is a Live CD, but it's easy to install from, I just don't remember which of the above methods I used.

If you boot to the Ubuntu CD it will simply launch into the LiveCD which is a running version of Ubuntu running directly from RAM and the CD. There should be an Install icon on the desktop that will walk you through the wizard, including selecting which partition to install to.

I got messed up when the installation told me to select the partition. Can anyone help me out with that please?? How to actually partition while installing or do I have to partition it before and keep one drive ready for ubuntu to install??

here is the documentation for the Live CD install that Gregg mentioned. Scroll down to where it says "select a disk". You'll notice a radio button on that screen that says "manually edit partition table". That's what you want.

Ok, joe...I will try this at home and will get back if any errors persist or if I'm unable to do it.

Thanks for the help!
