Max number of items in a listbox?

What is the limitation on the number of items displayed in a listbox? (the contents of the listbox is generated dynamically by a JSP)
I have seen web pages on the net used for registration containing the listbox to select a country from a list of 100 or so items.

Would it be safe to load 100 items in a listbox, with each item containing 50 chars in an IE browser? Listbox seems to be more appealing to our end users here, than a server round trip with a textbox. My concern is the browser might crash if I load many items in a listbox.

We are using IE 6.0 on Windows NT4.0.

thanks,
Vishwa

The only real issue is page loading times AND how long it takes the user to get to their desired item. If the person needs to get to the last item, how will it take (that is what you should worry about).

Eric,
I agree that the page loading with take more time, if I load 100 items in a list box.

Since the list would be sorted, scrolling up and down for a particular item in the list box wouldn't take much time for the user. Would it?...

Our other approach would be to display a pop-up child window with a list of items displayed as radio buttons (may be with pagination as well!). The User could select one of the items from this window, but this approach means more work for us -
