I just tried it, and verified that I could delete a topic I started, even if others had posted to the topic. I used a different (non-sheriff) account, so I'm pretty sure this power is available to anyone. Not sure what happened when you tried, Conrad. I consider it a flaw because, although it's nice for the
thread creator, I don't think it's really fair to the other contributors to a thread if the creator decides to delete the whole thread. He should be able to
close the thread, OK, so that if others want to continue they must start new threads. And he should be able to edit or even delete his own posts. (And yes, UBB does support all these options.) But it seems wrong to me that he should have the power to delete other people's posts. People put time and effort into creating those posts - why should they lose that because the original poster changed his mind?
