Hi,
I wish to devlelop a web application working on my customized browser window (without toolbars, menubar, location and address bar). I don't have much control on the login page so once the user enters the username and password, i have to redirect the outcome of the logging operation to my new customized browser window and close the parent window. In IE, if we close the parent window, it gives an alert, which i wish to avoid.
Please provide the snippets of code to redirect the output of the parent window to the new window and also closing the parent without alert.
If the login fails, the child window should not be opened and the error message be shown in the parent itself. Will the session in the child window be a new one or same as the parent in case of re-direction?

You can not close the main window. It is a security feature and you can not get around it.

Hi Eric,

If I cannot close the main window what can be done with it, shall I clear its contents and allow the user to use only the child window.
Would it be fine this way, I meant in sync with the norms for the Web applications and products?

Moreover, I need your further help in providing me the snippets of code for redirecting the result of user login (in the main window)
to the child window (maintaining the same session as the parent window).

Please help me with these two issues as I need it urgently for my work.

Thanks and Regards,
Sreenath Reddy

The only thing you have is window.open to use. Most pop up blockers will block the onload window.open so you need to have a link on the page if it is blocked.

Just let the window sit there, there is nothing you can do to close it since it is against the security settings.
