I have given my Sony laptop for repair.and technician said HardDisc controller chip 'has gone'(means he seems to say its damaged).
Do you think this could be the actual reason for I am not able to install anything (all Linux disros I have tried)? Every installation hangs displaying 'detcting IDE ... etc".

He is asking Rs 3000(US$ 66) for replacing that HardDisc controller chip on motherboard.
Do you think thats the right price?Here in (India) its very difficult to find Laptop hardware parts and people experienced in laptop hardware.

I showed my laptop to another shop.technician there said harddisc cable 'has gone'.
He replaced it and now laptop is working with windows XP.
Total money wasted: Rs 3000+Rs 1200(labor charge) = Rs 4200
