Ok my taptop has an ol' VGA output, and my tv has a DVI-I input on it.

Now the input on the tv is 3 pins tall by 8 pins wide, and has the one really wide pin to the far left.

I bought a dvi to vga cable, but it has two pins above and below the really wide pin (which my tv does not) AND the wide pin is too wide to fit??

I've been looking and looking, and all the DVI-I male 'ended' cords all have those funky 2 pins above and below the really wide one...

What do I need to do to get my laptop to hook up to my tv ?

tv is a RCA-R52WH74
laptop is a SONY VIAO( VGN - NR220E )

Thanks a bunch,

Justin Fox

I am not sure what type of DVI you purchased, but here is one I think you are looking for.

DVI to VGA

Would it be possible for you to post a picture of the connector you have?

I finally found out what I needed, my tv actually has a DVI-D input on the back, so directly using a dvi to VGA cable is impossible, I had to get a DVI-D Male to DVI-I Female adapter to work with my DVI-I to VGA cable.

DVI-D has either full 3 rows of eight pins and the spade pin or 3 rows of pins with 2 or 3 missing out of the middle( dual link/single link ) and a spade pin, and no pins above or below the spade pin.

DVI-I has a similar format, but has the two pines above and below the spade pin. And also the spade pin is a tad bit more wide.

So once I get my adapter my DVI-I to VGA cord should work just fine.

Thanks,

Let me know how it works. I think there's a problem anyway, because VGA is analog and DVI is digital (not 100% sure, though)
