I initially went through http://www.jchq.net/certkey/index.htm which is for 1.4 but it is a good tutorial so I felt it a good starting point. Then studied the Sun generics tutorial (pdf). I also used http://java.boot.by/scjp-tiger/ somewhat which I think is good.

I actually was given notice of the termination of my contract at work and end work on 23rd of December. As such I booked in the earliest exam date I could and bought the whizlabs exams to quickly learn what I was lacking.

I failed every whizlabs exam except for the last 1 which I passed with 59%.

I found that while whizlabs were harder than the real exam and taught me many concepts because of this, it's content didn't quite match that of the real exam. For example API contents was always my worst in whizlabs and Threads my best. However in the real exam API contents was secend best at 80% and Threads was worst at 50%. This is because the content was a bit different.

I would recommend whizlabs however.

Hello Alistair:

First of all congrats for passing for the exam.
But sorry to see your contract ending.
Hope you can find your job soon and with scjp 5 in your pocket it should be easy.

By the way can you tell me how much time did you spend in preparing for the exam.and what books did you refer to.

At a guess I spent 80 hours studying for it and I didn't use any books. Only online material which is mentioned in my first post.
