I tried to become SCJP 5.0 today but I failed..
The exam is really a lot different then the mock exams for 1.4
There are almost no real theoretical questions like the most in 1.4 are.
A lot of questions that took me a lot of time to answer, because of that I had to hurry at the end..

Some of the drag and drop questions are horrible and because you have to give 10+ answers in such a question the chance of a wrong answer is quite big.

Well the first thing I did when I was home was ordering the K&B book.
The book I used to learn this time was the "Complete Java 2 Certification" book fromPhill Heller and Simon Roberts. DONT BUY THIS BOOK! This book is a shame.. I think this book was made in a hurry, the questions in the tests from each chapter dont even come close the the real questions. The things that are NOT in the exam like binary operators and all the methods of the Match class for example are in the book and the Java 5.0 features don't get the attention that they need.

Well what can I say..
Maybe you can give me some advice in what to do now..
I think I will just learn the K&B book..
What should I do besides this book?

Greetings from Holland and this forum and you guys are really nice, I will stick to this forum, even when I will become SCJP in the future to help other people!

edit: what about the Whizlabs SCJP 5.0 Exam Simulator --> http://www.whizlabs.com/scjp/scjp-5.0-details.html
Is this worth buying?
Does anybody have experience with this?

what I can tell you is K&b book for scjp 5.0 is the best and only one for passing the exam. If you read the book carefully three times and understand every details, You'll get high marks. I think MasterExam for scjp 5.0 could be a good mock exam software. However I can safely say if you buy K&B book for scjp 5.0, you don't need any other books or mock exam.

Well Jorg. I will take into account what you have said but IMHO you should not put the blame on a book just because it is not the K&B book. I agree that the K&B book for SCJP 1.4 which I used got me certified and I will use HFSJ(will order it from the internet) in order to get my SCWCD. I really like the style and these books are interesting because you can learn about on the job issues not only for certification. But this certainly does not mean that there aren't any other certification books.
Of course if you ask me I will also get the K&B book for SCJP5 when I will decide to get certified for 1.5 JDK
Good luck !

Hi Mihai,

I think I did not made my post clear.
I dont blame the book for not getting certified, I only want to say that it isn't a real good book and other people said the same. The only thing I wanted to reach with my comments on the book is to let other people know that I did not liked the book.
I did not learned enough for the exam thats for sure, and thats not the fault of the book!
I understand that you think I blamed the book but thats not the point, I dont blame the book.

I will just study on and I will, I must get certified

Thanks for your post, I hope its clear now.

Regards,

Jorg

Ok . I understand.
Jorg .. as a 5 day certified programmer I can only say that this certification brought me a well paid job in Bucharest(Romania) at the first interview I went.
And usually I need to go to 5 interviews in order to get a job or at least something solid from the employee.
Moreover : at each interview I went so far I was asked to pass a SCJP type test .... or a mock exam if you like(and they are dificult for the average Java programmer). Nobody even considered giving me a test now.
So I believe that this certification is worth the preparation however you do it(especially if you are certified for 1.5 JDK).
Of course if you want a DBA job you can't expect this certification to help too much .
Good luck !

Well the reason that I want to get certified is because of this:
I am a student, 21 years old and I dont do a programmers study.
I do company-skilled ICT and programming is only a little part of my study.
On my work I program a lot tough and I am working on own projects for customers. I learned myself Java and my colleagues helped me with that when I was a trainee. I came quite far by learning Java myself and I want to convert that into SCJP. I will stay working at the company I work at right now after my study, so I really want to become SCJP for myself!
I also think I am so motivated because I want this just for myself. My work helped me tough, I went to the Sun Java Programming Language training course for 5 days, my work paid. I also did the exam on the cost of my work and thats nice of them!

Well I will study on and I think I want to go for SCJD too after SCJP, I just like programming in Java
