I just wanted to share some thoughts on the SCJP 6 exam. (And say hello to everyone as this is my first post here.)
Firstly, if someone is wondering whether he or she should take the SCJP 5 or 6 exam, I would encourage to go for the 6 exam. The differences between these two are minimal. I had some doubts myself, especially as there is no Kathy & Bert book for SCJP 6 published yet (Yes, I learnt from this great book, too.) And I was basically learning as if I were to take the 5 exam. At the very end of my preparation, I read the JavaRanch topic on the differences between these two exams and learnt the new things. But in the end, on the exam I got just one question from the SCJP 6 specific material.
It is of course a good idea to do some mock exams. I did the quizzes from the book (with various results ) and the master exam that was attached to the book. I scored only 64% on this one (which was enough for SCJP 5, but not for 6). Due to time constraints, I did not even have time to take the bonus exam that was also added to the book.
I did the full mock exam a couple of days before the real exam. The remaining time I decided to spend on finishing reading the book and re-reading some topics. So basically I did just one full mock exam and it did not give me much confidence before the exam. But to my surprise, the exam result was much better than I expected. So a small remark at end - do more mock exams than me (to feel more confident before the exam), but if you do not - you should still succeed, given that you read the Kathy & Bert book It is that good And so much fun to read
I was preparing for about a month, learning mostly in the evenings after work and sometimes during weekends. I actually read two chapters of K&B earlier, but during that I had so many breaks. Similarly as Gosia wrote, the breaks are certainly a bad idea.
I would like to go for the latter exam that you mentioned. But it is a long way to go
The concurrency questions that I had were more or less of the same difficulty as in K&B. But I lost some point there as well. Too my surprise, I lost even more on flow control, which before (an even during) the exam did not seem to be the hardest topic. As opposed to e.g. generics, which I considered to be more tricky, but on the exam got not really difficult questions.
Please have a look at the following topic on this forum, it discusses the differences between the two exams:
hi,Andrzej Gruszczyk thanks for your reply.i need some more information.beacuase scjp1.6 is a new ,how can you managed to get mock exams for it.and also can you able to me weightage of the topics. Is exam pattern is same as scjp 1.5.how many questions are there scjp1.6 exam.what is the pass percentile for it.In which topics questions are twisted.
congrats,I was puzzled whether to take scjp1.5 or 1.6,Not much information on the net also regarding 1.6,I want know how much tough are questions in 1.6,request your advice on the same.Any help highly appreciated.
The pass percentage has been raised from 59% to 65%. But the time has also been increased - from 175 to 210 minutes. (As it was mentioned by Kelvin Lim in the topic I pointed to in my previous post.)
I believe the questions on SCJP 5 and SCJP 6 are of the same difficulty. Probably they are simply the same questions with some additional ones for SCJP-6-specific things. On the exam I got just one of these SCJP 6 questions - about Console. I was probably wrong on this one, because I skipped this topic when I was learning. (I learned other things, like NavigableSet and NavigableMap, but was not checked on them.)
