I just received word about a new test from IBM to be announced officially later today, with 100 vouchers to be made available early next year.
The name of the new Role will be:
IBM Certified Solution Developer - Web Services for WebSphere Studio V5.1
The title of the new test will be:
Test 288, Developing Web Services for WebSphere Studio V5.1

This certification targets intermediate level developers who have experience in WebSphere Studio Application Developer V5.1 and Web Services development. This developer is responsible for using WebSphere Studio Application Developer V5.1 to design, create, package, publish, and test Web services, and support the development of clients that access them securely.
This professional is expected to apply sound Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) analysis and design techniques, using WebSphere Studio Application Developer V5.1.
This certification role and applicable test will be "generally available" worldwide December 31, 2003.
Candidates can qualify to take Test 288 free-of-charge. The first 100 candidates who pass Pre-Assessment/Sample Test 288 between January 12, 2004 (12:00 am Eastern Time) to February 29, 2004, earn a voucher that can be used as payment when registering to take the actual certification test. Vouchers are not transferable, will be sent electronically within 72 hours from qualifying, and expire April 30, 2004. Qualified candidates require to take the actual test (if paying for the test with the voucher) by April 30, 2004.

I will be contacting my publisher a.s.a.p. to propose a certification study guide for this new exam, and I'll be sure to keep y'all posted.
Here are a couple of links to the announcements on IBM's Web site:
Announcement: New WebSphere Certification Tests in 2004
Announcement: Solution Developer - Web Services with WebSphere Studio V5.1

I failed with 35%. 60% is requested... I forgot about time and left 5 or 6 questions without completing.
The redbook on the site is not enough to pass. Take the SOAP, WSDL, UDDI specification with you.

I barely passed with 62.5%, it is more difficult than I had expected. I've been developing web services for a while so I did not prepare as hard as I should. Hope I will get the free voucher.

If you have to pay for a test, even a sample test, why would it be ok to post the questions for everyone else to review for free? It would be like posting the code to software that you bought for everyone else to use. If the test is a free test and there is no license agreement, disclosure, etc. then fine. However, I'm guessing this isn't the case for these tests.
I didn't delete the questions myself, not sure who did, but posting anything that others have to pay for is pretty much prohibited.
If you want to know what's on the test, take it. Not really fair to benefit for free what other people must pay for.

I passed with 81%. From my point of view, the test is difficult and ambiguous.
To pass, read the redbook + JAXRPC spec + webservices spec, read also the articles provided as educational resources.

Howard,
Now your signature says: IBM Certified Solution Developer - Web Services with WebSphere Studio V5.1
Could you share your experience with that exam.
Thanks,

Hi Vasja and Friends,
I can honestly say that it's one of the toughest ones I've ever seen. That said, I am getting a team of authors together in order to start work on a certification study guide for the 288 test. Hope you like it!

Hi Mr.Howard,
When will that book be approximately available in the market? Even u said that 288 test is very tough and what about others? Would it be a nightmare for them? Thanks...

Hi Ko Ko,
We are late getting started, but I figure about six or seven months to get the manuscript done and then a month of production work should just about do it.

Hi Vasja,
The real test is IMHO remarkably similar to the pre-assessment/sample test.

Hi Howard,
Before your book comes out, is it fair to say that the IBM Web Services Red Book is the best bet for this test? I would think if one has good command of the book's content and has some experience with WSAD/WebServices, he/she should have a good chance passing the test. Would you agree based on your experience?
Thanks as always,
Zach

It's good to know this. I guess it's worth the 10 bucks to take the pre-assessment/sample test - who knows, maybe you can still get the free voucher. Anyway, as time goes by, I bet they would "improve" the real test so it would be more different (more difficult ) than the sample. So the earlier, the better. Just my 2 cents.
