hi all,

I appeared for 833 today and cleared it with 74%.
When I was giving the exam I was taken aback as most of the questions were not what I had prepared for. I had prepared for test 486 with UML Distilled and Larman, but most the questions in 833 seem to be from some other source. For starters there were no diagrams (at all!) or case study which I had expected and prepared for. Also there were repeated questions on structured classes, interfaces in sequence diagrams (?), analysis classes , RUP concepts like boundary, entity etc.

Hi Congratz!!

I am also preparing for 833 and 834.. I do prepare with UML distilled and Craig Larman's Applying UML and patterns. From your post I am much worried and confused to follow which books.

Does anyone have any idea?

IBM is not all providing any guidelines for this. I even emailed IBM, but whatever they say is just paid training program. But for all the SUN exams we have a lot recommeded books etc. Not sure why IBM is doing like this.

It would be great if anyone can recommend any materials or books.. or sample questions etc. for 833 and 834

I passed today 000-834 previos to 000-833 with 98%. The exams are easy but from my point of view is necesary study Analysis and Design discipline from Rup process for some questions about specific activities. I suggest to study from UML Distilled 3d edition and Rational Method composer for A&D discipline.

Download Rational Method Composer trial version from the link below
http://www-306.ibm.com/software/awdtools/rmc/

Once installed (with a free registered ID), open the tool and launch help -> RMC Process Browser. In the process browser, click on tab 'team' -> 'Disciplines' -> 'Analysis & Design'.

Follow through the Tasks, Concepts, Guideline pages to learn about subsystem design, analysis mechanisms, architectural mechanisms, unify collaborations, unify use cases....

"vin",
Please check your private messages.

It's better to start a new topic for your questions than to tack them to the bottom of someone else's. You stand a better chance of getting an answer and you'll be less likely to derail someone else's.

Thank you Vinay. Could also you please clarify which editions of Craig Larman's and Martin Fowler's book is needed for exams 833 and 844. I have second edition books, but I believe latest ones are 3rd edition.

I am following 3rd edition (both Fowler & Larman) as I have online access to them through http://safari.oreilly.com. I am taking 833 & 834 in another 10 days.

The key difference between 3rd and earlier editions is UML 2.0. Other differences are captured in the excerpts below.

3rd Edition Enhancements - Applying UML and Patterns - Craig Larman.

"While retaining the same core as the prior edition, this edition is refined in many ways, including:

- UML 2
- A second case study
- More tips on iterative and evolutionary development combined with OOA/D
- Rewritten with new learning aids and graphics for easier study
- New college-educator teaching resources
- Agile Modeling, Test-Driven Development, and refactoring
- More on process modeling with UML activity diagrams
- Guidance on applying the UP in a light, agile spirit, complementary with other iterative methods such as XP and Scrum
- Applying the UML to documenting architectures
- A new chapter on evolutionary requirements
- Refinement of the use case chapters, using the very popular approach of [Cockburn01]
"

3rd edition enhancements - UML Distilled - Martin Fowler

"Changes for the Third Edition

If you have earlier editions of this book, you're probably wondering what is different and, more important, whether you should buy the new edition.

The primary trigger for the third edition was the appearance of UML 2. UML 2 has added a lot of new stuff, including several new diagram types. Even familiar diagrams have a lot of new notation, such as interaction frames in sequence diagrams. If you want to be aware of what's happened but don't want to wade through the specification (I certainly don't recommend that!), this book should give you a good overview.

I've also taken this opportunity to completely rewrite most of the book, bringing the text and examples up to date. I've incorporated much that I've learned in teaching and using the UML over the past five years. So although the spirit of this ultrathin UML book is intact, most of the words are new.

Over the years, I've worked hard to keep this book as current as is possible. As the UML has gone through its changes, I've done my best to keep pace. This book is based on the UML 2 drafts that were accepted by the relevant committee in June 2003. It's unlikely that further changes will occur between that vote and more formal votes, so I feel that UML 2 is now stable enough for my revision to go into print. I'll post information any further updates on my Web site (http://martinfowler.com)."

Martin Fowler further distilled making 3rd edition lighter than earlier editions.

Hello,

Just to give an update, I took 833 last Friday and I scored 92%. This was my preparation strategy

- I confined all my preparation to the test objectives available at

http://www-03.ibm.com/certify/tests/obj833.shtml

- Downloaded Rational Method Composer trial version from the link below
http://www-306.ibm.com/software/awdtools/rmc/

- Focused on all the pages (Tasks, Guidelines, Concepts etc.)in RMC process browser -> 'Team' -> 'Disciplines' -> 'Analysis and Design' that I found relevant or map one - one to test objectives, sections and subsections available at

http://www-03.ibm.com/certify/tests/obj833.shtml

I also referred to some of supporting material within RMC Process Browser -> 'Team' tab like,

- Differences between UML 1.x and UML 2.0
- Introduction to RUP
- Iterative Development
- Process Essentials
- Visual Modeling
- From Waterfall to Iterative Lifecycle
- Layering Strategies
- System Variables
- The Ten Essentials of RUP

Eventhough, it didn't seem relevant for the test 833, I quickly browsed through pages covering main topics like Class Design, Subsystem Design, Capsule, Use Case Design.

- I referred to Larman and Fowler (3rd edition) just enough to get further clarification/understanding on the topics I studied above and verify if what's in RMC is consistent with what's in the 3rd editions.

- I also spent couple of hours quickly browsing through Learning UML 2.0 book.

I am taking 834 on 17th. I will send another update once I am done with it.

Given my recent experience with 833, below are some key learnings I am applying towards 834 preparation strategy.

- Don't deviate from the test objectives, sections and subsections.
- Focus on content within RMC process browser -> 'Team' -> 'Disciplines' -> 'Analysis and Design'. Every statement matters!!
- Create as many questions as possible as I read through the content.
- Refer to Larman for application scenarios
- Refer to Fowler's for any missing points/topics.
- Refer to Learning UML 2.0 specifically for notation and understanding differences between UML diagrams and what diagrams are part of what architectural view.

More updates after I am done with 834! Until then all the best to everyone preparing for 833.

Hello!

Just wanted to share an update! I took 834 yesterday and I passed the test. I had to prepone the test from 17th due to other exam (RUP 839) scheduled next week. Test questions were not much of a surprise as they are largely (more than 90%) confined to 'Analysis and Design' discipline content of RUP process within RMC tool. Given my recent experiences, I think, 833 & 834 primarily tests the knowledge of OOAD from IBM process perspective specifically, RUP. Maybe, IBM will introduce a new test soon with questions that just confine to application experience of this knowledge.

Here is an updated preparation strategy I suggest for 834. I will focus on 'what not to overlook'. For the rest, see my earlier posts.

- Confine preparation to course objectives, sections and subsections available at http://www-03.ibm.com/certify/tests/obj834.shtml.

- Allocate 85% of the preparation time to RMC process browser -> 'Team' -> 'Disciplines' -> 'Analysis and Design'content.
- Start with the 'task' pages as most of them map one - one to the course objectives, sections and subsections available at http://www-03.ibm.com/certify/tests/obj834.shtml.
- Don't overlook what steps (including the step #) in a given task. For example: the step # of 'Define the network configuration' in 'Describe Distribution' task.
- and the task is a part of what process workflow activity? for example: 'Identify design elements' task is a part of 'Analyze behavior' process workflow activity.
- A role performs a task and for every task there are input and output work products/artifacts. For each task, remember what goes in, what comes out and who performs it. For example: what is the output of Use Case Design task.
- Be keen on the notation used in each diagram. for example: if an object or attribute identifier is underlined what would it indicate?
- Don't digest anything without remembering the purpose of each task, activity, artifact or the work product.
- For most 'what is' ask ' what is not'. For example: What is an active class? what is not an active class? what is an active class that is not a capsule?
- For most suggestions made in the task or guidance pages, reason. for example: Why should I depict subsystem interfaces instead of subsystem objects in a sequence diagram.
- Don't miss that Artifacts can contain other artifacts. For example: Analysis and Design mechanism mapping is captured in Software Architecture Document.
- Keep an eye on the context of a statement. For example: The purpose of a Use Case realization in a Design task may be different from the purpose of the same in an analysis task.

- Give other 15% preparation time to UML distilled followed by Larman and/or Learning UML 2.
- Some questions require you to pick three out of four. Although, there is only one to rule out, that's the tricky part.
- Last but not least, I strongly believe that IBM has provided such clear and comprehensive content to guide us in making good design decision and not to learn how to make intelligent guesses to pass the test. This is critical for those targeting 100%.

For those interested, I have audio version (in mp3 format) of some the pages within RMC process browser -> 'Team' -> 'Disciplines' -> 'Analysis and Design' specifically for 834. These are password protected and unfortunately, I cannot share the login information here.

Hi Vinay,

I congratulate you for clearing 833 & 834 exams. Wish you good luck for more exams that you are planning to take.

I also appreciate the time and effort you put in documenting your test prep and suggestions for exam takers.

I'm planning for RUP 7.0 and so far I heard that UML (3 rd edition) books from Larman and Martin Fowler would suffice.

Any suggestions to read more!!!?

Thanks.

Hello, Vinay!

Could you tell us where are those mp3s taken from? If they are not free I'll pay for them but I don't know how to find them. Is is some commercial stuff?

Google doesn't help.

Best regards!
