SSL requirement

For preparing an itinerary SSL is a requirement according to the documentation. Are we allowed to neglect this ?

If you search amazon for books, why on earth do you need SSL for ? SSL is expensive and should only used where really necesairy. For example; if I log in with my account I want my uid/pwd to be transfered using SSL, afterwards I can continue with http. If I want to pay a book (after searching it) I want SSL.

That's a very valid assumption to make - the instances when you would need SSL. The PrepareItinerary is a very vague and confusing use case especially the pricing part. I have made several assumptions in this regard.
