Question on DAO

For search implementation (read-only data), do we need to have a separate DAO for each DB table or can we have single DAO quering multiple tables and formulate appropriate transfer object. I see the petstore catalog implementation is using single DAO. What is the best practice?

Keep maintainability in mind and the fact that you will have a few "nearly" independent subject areas in your database.
