Assignment does not specify which technology is being used to create the existing Frequent Flyer system.

What did the examinees assume about the Frequent Flyer system?
1) Did they assume that Frequent Fkyer is written using J2EE?
2) Did they assume using Frequent Flyer is written using some other OO language, other than J2EE?

Assignment only suggests something similar to:
Frequent Flyer system will not be re-wrtiien. The Java app of Travel Agent and web app of Customer should be able to access the frequent Flyer system.

I suggest you to read the requirements again... specially the last sentence of the second paragraph of the Background section
