please advise on this SCWCD preparation schedule

Hello ranchers,

I am preparing for the SCWCD exam since the past 1-1.5 months. Till now I have only read the SCWCD Exam Study Kit book by Hanumanth Deshmukh (haven't given its mock exam yet). But I found out that it doesn't have some topics, e.g. JSTL tags, dynamic attributes, Expression language, etc.

Does the Head First Servlets & JSP book cover all these topics in detail? I have that book, as well as Whizlabs simulator.

I'm taking too long to prepare, because I am a working professional, and so I do not study regularly at all - but from now on, I will try to make it a point that I study at least 2 hours per day.

So from now on my preparation agenda is this:-

1. Take up the HFS&J book, read it chapter by chapter; after each chapter, also revise the corresponding chapter Deshmukh book, and prepare notes by combining the two, and also answer questions on that topic using Whizlabs. I expect to finish it in January

2. After that, start taking the mock exams. This could happen till 3rd week of February

3. Take the SCWCD 1.4 exam in late Feb

Is this schedule fine? Please advise, give suggestions, etc. Also, are there any specific topics that are more difficult to understand than the others, so that I can spend more time practicing them?

Take up the HFS&J book, read it chapter by chapter;

I think you don't need to read it chapter by chapter as you have already read the other book. So i would suggest that read the topics in which you think you lack.

Hi, JSTL Tags(Chap 15) and Expression language(Chap 13) are covered completly in Hanumant Deshmukh . The objectives are given at the start of each chapeters. I think it is sufficient to read single book. But do browse through HFSJ and study the Bangs and take the test at end of each chapter. Attend a mock test and if you still feel that you have missed some thing go and study everything once again.

In the pdf version of the Hanumant Deskhmukh book that I have, chapter 13 doesn't cover JSTL tags like "<c:", etc. It just covers the standard java actions like <jsp:include> and <jsp:forward>

Also, chapter 15 does not cover expression language, but it shows how to develop custom tag libraries.

Could it be that I am using an older edition of the book?

I am sure you are using old edition. Buy book for 1.4 . These are extra features added in 1.4 .I think most of the previous chapters should be same. Go through the objectives and find out what you have not studied.

okay, but instead of buying a new book doesn't it make sense to prepare the rest from head first book, since i already have that? i think only the jstl and expression language topics are missing

Yes that's your choice. I was telling to get a book for 1.4. I studied on both the books and I prefer HFSJ.

i don't know about the print version, coz i have bought the head first book only... the pdf was given to me by a colleague who was studying for the exam...

now i feel i should have studied the head first book before looking at the pdf

Hi Guys,

I might be wrong about this. but I don't think that the Deshmukh pdf is available for free copying. I think if you get a pdf for free you might be using pirated, copyrighted material!

please don't use pirated material - authors everywhere are suffering from piracy!

same here dud...what i will suggest is...try to prepare on the fly...as asnd when time permits...stick to hfsj..give chapter tests from hanumant deshmukh..try to compress the hfsj book into short notes...

the book can easily fetch 70% + ..... i am in the final phase of the preparation...hope to wind up thing by january mid... ...
i have skipped classsic tags...i just dont find it to fit in my brain...and besides you get only couple pf questions on it...why sacrfice other topics for these questions !

but anyways, coming back to the topic, i'm planning to start reading the head first book from the beginning (i've completed the intro chapter yesterday ), and answer some topic-wise questions at the same time, before i attempt the mock exams

I thought it's available free on internet that's why I asked for it. I don't know whether its a pirated or free....

I know how much trouble you guys(Authors) take to compile a book. I cannot think about piracy.

Hi Guys,

I'm also using pdf version of SCWCD by Hanumant Deshmuk, It is the "Second, corrected printing, September 2002" version. I thought it contains all the topics that need to be covered for SCWCD exam? Is there a newer version available? If yes, please let me know.
