Hi all,
I just passed the exam with 98%. The only question I got wrong was about AWT, but I am not sure which one it was.
As many others have reported, most of the questions were on language fundamentals, rather than the API. In addition, I got questions on threads, garbage collection, streams and readers, and AWT events and layout. One question was about the GridBagLayout, but is was fairly simple. No questions involving sockets or the MediaTracker class. One question on threads had the "suspend" method as a correct answer, which surprised me a little, since this method is deprecated in Java 1.2. Otherwise, nothing terribly surprising. One question on anonymous inner classes was a little ambigous. I cannot say too much in this forum without giving away the question, but I'll give you this general advice: if the exam mentions "SomeInterface(x)", they really mean that this is supposed to be an interface. Of course it indicates this, but syntactically, there could be a class with the name "SomeInterface". Just keep this in mind. It seems like they are not trying to trick you with things like this.
It took me a little over an hour to answer all questions, and I spent another 20 minutes or so going over everything again and correcting one mistake (see below).
I mainly prepared with RHE, a couple of tutorials I found on the web, and of course lots of mock tests. Especially Marcus Green's three tests were very useful, and I would advise everybody to take all of them before the exam. The sample questions on "javaprepare.com" were also helpful. And of course, a lot of thanks to everybody at JavaRanch. I discovered this forum fairly late (only a little over a week ago), but it helped me a lot.
I also advise everybody to pay a lot of attention to the exam questions and thecorresponding code, which can be a little tricky sometimes. For example, one of the questions was about a nested for loop (nothing too exciting, pretty much like in any of the mock tests). However, in the mock tests the output was usually the value of the outer loop variable, followed by the value of the inner loop variable. In the real test, it was the other way around, which I did not notice at first. I discovered and corrected this error when I went through all the questions after I was done.
Good luck everybody!
I am probably going to study for the developer's certification now, so you will still see me at JavaRanch. :-))
