Hi Raman,
I'm also preparing for the SCJP (actually, I failed my first trial).
This is a quick reply. I'll get back in a couple of hours with more details. But to start with, have a look at
http://www.javaranch.com/certification.html
The Certification page!
As for books I highly recommend you the Java Language Specification (2nd edition) and Thinking in Java, of Bruce Eckel.
There are downloadable versions (but I don't have the links on hand... later).
As for the preparation, Paul Wheaton gently gave me more precision: you should intensely prepare for 8 weeks of 20 hours a week.
As for coding, he added: writing tiny programs to test concepts.
There are lots of mock exams sites / downloadables... I'll get some for you later.
Best of lucks!
Serge

You can find Bruce Eckel book, along with a lot of other good stuff at http://bruceeckel.com/
Here is a nice list (if you did not already got it) of mock exams: http://www.javaranch.com/maha/_Mock_Exams/_mock_exams.html
Another useful site: http://www.jchq.net/
You can find the Java Language Specification at:
http://java.sun.com/docs/books/jls/html/index.html
Java Tutorial at http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/index.html
The best book for SCJP preparation "A Programmer's Guide to Java Certification", by Mughal and another author...
The most popular book (nicknamed RHE): "The Complete Java 2 Certification Study Guide".
Also, have a look at the source
http://developer.java.sun.com/developer/infodocs/index.shtml#tutorials

Best of lucks!

Hi,
At first see the objectives for the test.Divide ur portion and try to read atleast one java certification book.Once u read u will have an idea what type of questions u can expect.come to ranch and participate here and try to read each and every question and try to answer.so that u will get some confident.if u r not able to answer that take that chapter and read again and again till u are able to.this will help u to be strong in each and every topic.
read more book(certified)read marcus notes etc.. write mock exams
