naving,
Here is my recipe for SCJP.
Step 1 - Read more details about certification program from Sun's website. You will also get information about how to register.
Step 2 - If you are an experienced Java programmer, read one or two certification guides. The Bunk house has a list of books also covering a couple of Certification guides. You can also use the Search facility to read older messages about other popular certification guides. If you are new to Java, you should first read a couple of Java programming books before diving in.
Also get Java Language Specification(JLS), JDK and Java API Documentation from Sun's website. They are free
Step 3 - Come here often. Try to answer questions posted by others. Get a feel for your strong and week areas. Get inspired by dozens of people who get certified every day. Listen to their experiences and valuable tips!
Step 4 - Take the Mock exams. They are free!. Java Ranch has a List of mock exam sites and here is another excellent list compiled by Maha Anna.
Step 5 - When you start scoring consistently above say, 85% take the exam. Ofcourse, if you want to score a very high percentile, see that you reach there when you do the mock exams.

Hope this helps, and Good luck!
Ajith

Morning came much too soon and it brought along a friend named Margarita Hangover, and a tiny ad.
