Susmita,
Menu should be included in the SCJP exam. If not also u should learn to use it. It'll take only a few minutes. Good book on awt is really rare.
Shahid is right about Deitel for beginners!

I used to think that Deitel and Deitel was the best but I saw a preview of the new Java2 book by Mike Murach and it beats it hands down! Great exercises - easy to understand insight into a complex language/platform. I'm told it'll be out within the month. I intend to adopt it for all future classes in Java.

hi,
I think from the list given Deitel's book should be replaced by Herb Schild and Patrick N. 's Java 2 : The Complete Reference.
Thread is explained good in Ivor Horton and then The Complete Reference.

The best book hands down is :
A programmer's Guide To Java Certification : Khalid Mughal
This is for getting prepared for the exam. His mock exam is pretty close to the real test (just took it 07/16/01 ... and past . I actually think his test is harder, I got a higher score in the real test ! The other resources out there are much easier if you ask me. I aced them (javacaps.com, marcus greens site, etc. )the first time it took them. So i rather be over prepared than under. There is nothing covered in any other book that's not in this one. Just don't read the Applet and the Swing chapters. But definitely go over the mock exams on the net, there good warmups and you do have to think.
A good book over all is:
Ivor Horton's Beginning Java 2
This book is excellent, it goes over the do's and don't and the implicit rules etc ..., but it's not geared as an exam prep. The information in Ivor's book is there but not highlighted for something to watch out for the exam and or has questions at the end. It's a good resource if you need one.
Good luck all !
