Kindly guide me about Sockets and Protocols

i'm new in java and java is first language which i'm learning.
dear kindly please guide me for Sockets and Protocols ... i have little bit idea about both of these but how can i use etc etc... for such please guide me by giving lecture time by time or tell me very beautiful sites from which i come to know how to programe Sockets and Protocols.
