asp server and java client

Is axis soap necessary for the java client to call an asp DLL or is there another way?

Microsoft also has tools for web services, which might be more in line with what you need if you're using ASPs. So the answer would seem to be 'no, axis isn't necessarily required'.

But the mssoap toolkit is geared for microsoft stuff not java or am I missing something

Yes, with Microsoft's toolkits you won't be coding Java but C# or VB.NET.
