I can't do that because we decided not to use swing in our project( due to some problems which I cannot place here). By the way I tried to simulate the menu by using AWT. but one of my collegues say that it is unconventional to use menus with applets or even to try simulating.
can anyone please comment on it.I need an experts comment on this who have experience in web based tech using java. ours is an intranet project.

How about having the applet generate a frame and stick the menu in the frame?

Don't u think generating a frame from the applet is more unconventional. And also almost all of the screens have menus and cannot generate frames for all the applets.it is a purely web based proj.

In that case I would not use menus. Have you thought about using the menuing technique seen at many web sites?
Try: http://www.imint.com/index.html

For anyone who is interested in how to put menus in applets I recommend this web page: http://www.javaworld.com/javaworld/jw-11-1996/jw-11-menubars.html
