Hi All ,
class I {
private I other;
public void other(I i) {other = i;}
}
class J {
private void m1() {
I i1 = new I(), i2 = new I();
I i3 = new I(), i4 = new I();
i1.other(i3); i2.other(i1);
i3.other(i2); i4.other(i4);
}
public static void main (String[] args) {
new J().m1();
}}
Which object is not eligible for garbage collection after method m1 returns?
a. i1
b. i2
c. i3
d. i4
e. Compile-time error
f. Run-time error
g. None of the above
I thought that i4 will be referencing to the object i4 and so will not good for garbage collection after the method m1 runs.
But the answer is None of the above. Can someone explain please ?

Hi Palani,
The object you are referring to has two references only :
variable i4 and its own other instance variable.
i4 is a local variable in method m1(), so after m1() runs :
1. You can not use i4 to access the object.
2. And obviously you can not use the object's other either to access the object.
Hence, after m1() runs, the object in discussion is no longer reachable from any live thread, and that makes it eligible for garbage collection.

Thank you very much David I did not remember the local variable thing. God so many things to keep track of. Hope I can remeber everything when the time comes. Thank you and Happy New Year 2004

What's that smell? I think this tiny ad may have stepped in something.
