Folks,

time to update the certification. If there is anyone just started prep for tiger cert and interested in forming a study group - please respond. Let us have a target of study material everyday and finish this baby in 3/4 weeks time. I am following Heller n Roberts SYBEX book.

Thanks n best wishes,
Siri.

Hi Guys -

The study group idea is great! Go for it!

I'm a bit embarrassed to say that I think that you'll need to find additional resources! None of the three books that you mentioned have complete coverage of the tiger exam (It's extra embarrassing because 2 of them are mine )

We're working to update the cert book for tiger but it's not done yet - i think there are other resources (like white papers and specs) that have been listed on this forum.

hth,

Bert

I am interested in joining this study group too.

I was preparing for SCJP 1.4 exams, but now I feel I should directly give SCJP 1.5 exams.

Thanks,
Hamid

Making a group is a good Idea. I think we should make a plan how we are going to study & discuss the topics here. It seems we don't have enough material.

The K & B New Edition is definitely worth the wait.

After reviewing the first 5 chapters so far, I can defintiely say that I have learned new things, and/or learned the things I know even better and fuller comprehension.

But, I am lucky enough to be a tech reviewer for the book and get to see the chapters in advance. But be patient, because it is not too far off.

I am too preparing for SCJP 5.0.

I have completed the first reading of Phil Heller book(for SCJP 5.0). I feel he has not done a good job in covering the new features in detail from Certification's perspective.

I am currently reading Java 2 v5.0 (Tiger) New Features by Herbert Schildt. I would highly recommend this book to get acquainted with new 5.0 features and for $16.49 on amazon.com is worth a buy. He explains the stuff nicely.

After that I plan to read the MZ notes and do some mock exams.

I feel I am forgetting old stuff as I soak in new ones

All of this till the updated K&B book is released.

Hi Bert,

I liked Head First Java very much. I am aware it's not written for SCJP exam but the way it evolve you understanding of Java concepts is very good. I also liked "Head First EJB", which I have read only introduction so far . I have decided to start this book, after doing the SCJP exam. Because of this I don't want to wait for too long.
Keeping this in mind, what would you advise? Which topics I should focus on , after reading the Head First Java.
When is K&B book due to come out? Is their any intro available on web for this book?

Hi Devender -

We think the book will be available in September - just a few chapters to go!

In the meantime, I can recommend Core Java 2 Fundamentals, Vol. 1 by Horstmann and Cornell, and Just Java 2 by Peter van der Linden. I think they both do a good job of covering Java in general and the new 5.0 stuff. They aren't study guides for the exam, though - so you have to study the Sun objectives carefully to decide which chapters and topics to focus on - plus, of course, they don't have any mocks...

We're getting very close, and we'll be posting some sample mocks in this forum soon!

hth,

Bert

I feel this group should be catered to the needs of those aspiring to clear SCJP 5.0 and not SCJP 1.4 otherwise we will loose focus.

Hi guys,
The intention was to create the group for those who want to tame the TIGER not 1.4. Having said that, 1.4 ppl can surely benifit from it.

I will create a yahoogroups account for a common platform (for emails and progress chekin etc... ). But post all your questions in javaranch only.

FIRST FEW DAYS TASKS - Starting from today. (This should be a smooth sail for many of us)
DAY 1: Language fundamentals operators and assignments.
DAY 2: Modifiers, Convering and Casting
DAY 3: Flow control, assertions and exceptions.
DAY 4: OBJECTS and classes
DAY 5: Review time.

Why do you have to create a Yahoo Group, you can do all your posting here in this forum. that is what this forum is for, for everyone who is studying for the SCJP exam.

There is a SCJP Yahoo Grouop out there already too, if you wanted to join that group.

hi all,

I think it would be nice if we include information regarding the objectives of the exam, preperation tips, books to read in our group discussion.

I also encourage to discuss the fine points of any one topic from the ground per day. So that every body can find tune thier knowledge.

What do you think?

tiger = SCJP 5.0 For Java JDK 5.0

There are some different objectives, including many new feature in Java 5.0.

hi,

after the review, we can group all of the questions discussed and the other intresting questions every one wants to share in a common place. It will be useful for the new comers as well as for us too, later for last minute preparation.
