Yes. More specifically:

Successful completion of previous version of Sun Certified Programmer for Java 2 Platform exam

so should I go write the 1.4 test( and then upgrade later) now or wait for KB's 5.0 book?

The upgrade exam in my experience is considerably easier than the full SCJP 5 exam. I had the free voucher from SUN because I took the SCJA. I took the SCJP 5 full exam and got 57%. I waited two weeks and took the upgrade exam instead and got 67% even though I really didn't prepare much.

On the initial version of the exam, I got butchered on the Collections - Generics and Threading section. The upgrade exam threading section is not nearly so complex.

I'd actually go from the opposite point of view - I've found the upgrade exams harder than the full exam. I think it's more a concentration on the new topics than the wholesale inclusion of topics I feel more comfortable with, but that notwithstanding, I did see some use for updating.

On the topic of from 1.4 -> 5.0... I don't know that it's as valueable. I'd personally be inclined to wait for the Java SE 6 exam instead, as it's only one version difference at the moment.

The problem with waiting for SCJP 6 is that there might not be such an exam.

As far as I know, JSE 6 will introduce no new language features just API changes, so I don't think Sun will think that this merits a new exam.

After all there is no SCBCD for J2EE 1.4.
