I keep getting the javaRanch GiveAway emails despite the fact that my preferences are set not to receive these.

I have contacted the people who run the site to ask them to stop but have received no response.

If one of the administrators sees this can you please dort this out for me? Also, why did no one respond to my email?

Hi Brad,

Where did you send the email that was ignored? That's not how we do business around here.

Regarding the mailings: often when this happens it's because the user, unknowingly, has more than one JavaRanch account. If you can, please forward one of the unwanted emails to me -- in such a way that the original headers remain intact -- and I will see if I can figure out what's going on.

I see you sent that mail to moosesaloon@javaranch.com. Sorry, that was me who should have responded. That account has gotten badly saturated with spam over the years; it's easy to miss important stuff. I've just redirected that mail to a new gmail account; hopefully that will be able to handle the load better.

As for your problem - well, what Ernest said. Please send a copy of the complete message header. Thanks.

Hmm. I got your email, but it doesn't have any useful info in the header; in particular, there's no "To: " header in it at all, so it's not possible to tell exactly where the message was sent. It does appear that it came directly from us -- i.e., it wasn't forwarded from one account to another.

I don't think the "Your Preferences" works. I have the same problem as the original poster -- the preference is not to receive promotions, but I do get them all the time. Here is the header from one of the the latest ones:

Date: Tue, 8 Mar 2005 09:59:24 -0700 (MST)
From: "JavaRanch Giveaway" <bookgiveaway@javaranch.com>
To: "JavaRanch Giveaway" <bookgiveaway@javaranch.com>
Subject: JavaRanch book promotion - Robust Java by Stephen Stelting

On a side note, I wonder how that promotion thing works. I mean, are there Java developers who can't afford $25 to buy a book?

I think a full header looks something like this:

It works. I never get email and I've it set to not get email...

There are. Think of students and people in 3rd world countries.
But more than that it's a great way for authors and publishers to get their books publicity at little cost to themselves or anyone.
Cheaper and more effective than a marketing campaign using banner ads and stalls at trade shows.

i've been getting the same problem - all my prefs are set to 'dont send me stuff' but they just keep on coming. not only that, but now the site says there are no accounts set up for my email address (when i entered it in the 'forgot password' box) i have sent 3 mails to the 'contact us' address with no response - getting annoyed now!

Rob, when did you send the last of these e-mails? I don't see any e-mails from a "Rob". What address were they sent to, and sent from? You can e-mail me at jim (at) javaranch.com if you don't want to post it publicly. If you can also include a complete header from one of the spam e-mails, that would be most helpful. Thanks.

Yes I did - but haven't yet had much luck tracking down the problem yet. My apologies. I should be able to look more carefully once I finish my taxes.
