Initializing variables

Hi all,

I have had some doubts when I saw the code below.

  
        final int x = 5;
 final int y;
 y = 6;
  
 switch( 8 ){
 case x:// Compile
 case y:// Don't compile
 }

Could someome explain me the difference between initializing x and y ??

I would like to undertand why the line "case y:" doesn't compile, I think this is related in the way how the variable was initialized?

Because x is given an initial value when it's declared, it is a compile-time constant.

But since y is not given an initial value when it's declared, it is not a compile-time constant.
