Greeting Ranchers around the globe !

May I post a little query about the Java Programmer certification for Java 5?
Ok, here it goes:

I just noticed that there are two different exams(products) for the Java 5 certification: 310-055 and 310-056(Upgrade)

My question is: Can I take the upgrade exam without having passed the regular (310-055) exam?

Or what exactly am I supposed to do? I'm a newbie, and I just wish to know which one should I aim for first....

Thank you very much -!

Jose

Let me give you an example. I passed 1.2 and 1.4 already. I have a choice of taking either the non-upgrade, or the upgrade exam. The upgrade exam contains only those that are new to 1.5, as compared to 1.2 and 1.4. The upgrade is nice for my case because it only involves the 'new stuff'.

For someone who has not passed any previous scjp, you have no choice but to take the non-upgrade.

You need to take either one of them only, not both.

Hello There Jesus !

I can consider you now as my savior Mr. !
I'm so relieved I gotta say, because I have the SCJP 5 Book by Bert and Kathy,
and it's basically an study guide for the 310-055 exam, not the 310-056.

and since I have no previous certification, I suppose I have no choice but to take that one, Thanks Jesus.

I'm taking this opportunity to ask One more thing:

When will SCJP5 expire? I mean, when will SUN replace it with the SCJP6 exam?

Once Again, Thank you Jesus.

No problem. Jesus saves.

Java 6 is quite new. You would have long passed the scjp5 before scjp6 would come out. And even if there is such a thing as 'expiration'(I am not aware), you would have learned knowledge that is useful to scjp6.

As far as Java6 is corcerned, it may or may not come in future (There was no exam for Java 1.3). Java 5 exam is quite new and I think there is no expiry for certification that you take in Java. 310-056 requires you to be certified either in Java 1.2 or Java 1.4 technology. Kathy Sierra book covers all topics for 310-056 test. However, in your case, you have to go for 310-055, as you are not yet certified. All the best for your preparation.
