How to handle LDAP response in servlets

Hi
I am new to the LDAP server. I am able to authenticate the user using LDAP server in
JSP
, but i have no idea how to handle the responses(error codes) from the LDAP server.
Can any one guide me to handle response codes for scanarios..
1)Successful authentication
2)UserName invalid
3)Password invalid
4)Password length
