I believe Windows has some native classes that can help you with the Word document. The excel spread sheet can be read using the JDBC-ODBC bridge.

u can try using JIntegra's Java-COM bridge. www.linar.com
It has most of the apis to read the MS word/excel documents

But how can you do it under unix?

Regarding the Word document under Linux/Unix....
has anyone checked Sun's StarOffice to see if they created cross-platform native classes to support reading and/or writing MS Word documents ?
