urgent: how to simulate getchar()

In C u can use get char to read input from console and it wont echo it
i am asking some user for password but if i type something, the console shows what i typed !
how can i stop the echo ing ?
I tried with bufferedReader.ready() and all but nothing seems to be working !

Unfortunately, Java provides no way to disable echo when reading from System.in.Java World provides some ideas on some alternatives.
