Java Message Bean - a stateful or a stateless session bean???

Neither really, it's a completly new "class" of bean.

It *is* stateless, but it's not a session bean.

The message bean is analogous to the stateless session bean, and will replace a stateless session bean in the architecture if a decision is taken to change the access strategy from synchronous remote or local access to JMS messages.
The only way to provide state is to have the message bean access a stateful session bean. Either that or go to a data store!
