JSTL: EL and variable names with "."

I'm just looking at JSTL and tried to convert a JSP page and ran into a problem. If I pass a variable like "my.variable" (in request scope) to my JSP, how can I use it with c ut ? Obviously <c ut value="my.variable"> won't work...

May I pop this question and add that I meant <c:out /> instead of the smilies crap? I can't imagine that there's no answer - there are just too many web apps that use attribute names with dots....
