Is there a way to manually translate and compile a JSP w/o letting the web container do it for you?

Yes one can precompile one's jsp. Here is a sample fragment from ant:

It's called the jspc task.

You have to make sure it is available in your project and change the attributes accordingly.

-then optional tasks
-then jspc

Give it a run and post your code if it does not work. I 'll have a look at it.
