I am going to start one more thread on Bombay salaries.
I am not sure if people would like to disclose their salaries, but if it is ok with u, how abt this....
Can each person mention his/her no of yrs of experience, position and salary.
If u r not comfortable disclosing the salary, how abt giving a range?

This is too much. In IT industry no two persons will get same sal even though they are working for same company. Its all depends how you bargain your sal. Now in India the salaries are approximately like 1 yr exp equal to 1 to 2 Lackhs per annum. For example if u have 5 yrs exp u can get 6 to 10 Lackhs per annum based on your bargaining.

I'm working for a CMM% &PCMM 5 company in mumbai.

I'm having around 3 yrs of experience in Java/J2EE. I've done Post Graduation in Comp Sci. (MCA) but basically a commerce graduate.

I'm getting around Rs.2,50,000/-p.a.

But as mentioned by Jagdish, I've people around me with the same profiles or may be even with less experience than me are getting more than me.

The salaries will depend a lot on which technology you will be working on. You had mentioned in your earlier post that you work in J2EE technologies.

To give you a gross estimate your salary will be Rs.(yrs. of exp +1)Lakh. This is a figure I have arrived on purely empirical basis, though most of the times it comes close to the actual figure.

One more thing, people who have experience in US / UK are not considered to be very good on processes by the companies out here. I do not know how much of this is true but I have heard this. So they might just get a little less than their Indian counterparts.

What do you mean not good in processes ?
Can you give an example, ya hypothetical...

In some countries, its considered impolite/rude to ask this question.
I will leave it at that to say the least.

And then your question is so open ended, I am sure you know it depends on a lot of things like others have said.

That's quite a turn-around. When I came to US in 99, I found that US companies were stronger on processes than companies in Bombay. Have things changed so much??

So whats your opinion, if tomorrow you get chance to come to US will you not take it because that will make you not "good in processes" like others?

Mike,
If I get a chance to come to US I will definitely take that. It would help me to earn lots of "$$" and also will enrich my experience.
About the processes being followed in US companies. I would form my opnion after working there myself. seems resonable.. doesn't it ??

Yep sounds very resonable, you can post other people's opinion till you form your own opinion, that would be reasonable too

You should be aware that the cost of living in places such as New York, Boston and Silicon Valley make it very hard to save any money, even though the salaries are high.

Sorry guys for the late reponse, I was away for a few days vacationing for Thnx Giving. Thank u all for ur responses thou the survey was not a real success

Jagdish Reddy: This is too much.
Me: What???
JR: In IT industry no two persons will get same sal even though they are working for same company.
Me: When did i say that that is the case.
JR: Its all depends how you bargain your sal.
Me: Exactly, and u need data to bargain effectively.

Runzun Agarwal: I'm having around 3 yrs of experience in Java/J2EE. I'm getting around Rs.2,50,000/-p.a.
Kaustubh Patil: To give you a gross estimate your salary will be Rs.(yrs. of exp +1)Lakh.
Vijay Vaddem: I have a friend here in hyderabad working for a MNC with 1 1/2 yrs of experience drawing 3.5Lakhs per annum.
Me: Runzun, Kaustubh, Vijay, thnx for the info.

Arjun Shastry: Sonia, what are your expectation about salary? What type of position will you be interested in?
Me: Arjun, I am looking for a team lead / project manager position and my salary expectation is 12+ lacs p.a.. As i had mentioned in earlier post, I have 8.5 yrs experience in Java/J2EE which includes 6 yrs US experience.

Madhav Lakkapragada: In some countries, its considered impolite/rude to ask this question. I will leave it at that to say the least.
Me: Madhav, i guess directly addressing the salary question to a specific individual might be considered impolite. But that is not the case in my post. I have provided the range option for people who are not comfortable with providing specific numbers and the rest who are still not comfortable neednt even participate in the thread. There is no compulsion or obligation of any sort. It is just for those willing to participate.
Also, recently i saw a salary survey in dataquest which was based on data gathered from individuals working for various companies. I dont think dataquest would do something that is considered rude/impolite. As to why i wud want to conduct my own survey inspite of having seen the DQ survey, thats cuz DQ operates in ranges like less than 5 yrs exp, 5-10 yrs exp, 10+ yrs exp and i am trying to go at a more fine grained level.

Kaustubh Patil: One more thing, people who have experience in US / UK are not considered to be very good on processes by the companies out here. I do not know how much of this is true but I have heard this.
Me: Since u heard this, I am sure that there might atleast be a few companies arnd who believe so. My personal opinion, there are companies both in India and US who may or may not follow processes, and a given individual may have been part of both kinds of companies, and hence country cannot be used as a factor to determine the individual's knowledge of processes, he can rather be tested on processes.
KP: So they might just get a little less than their Indian counterparts.
Me: Till now, I have heard otherwise, but again as u said, this is not ur opinion and again there cud be companies who do that.

Peter Wooster: You should be aware that the cost of living in places such as New York, Boston and Silicon Valley make it very hard to save any money, even though the salaries are high.
Me: 6 yrs back, when i was coming to silicon valley, i heard the same story and it bothered me, but this is just so untrue. lets consider a person with 2 yrs experience coming from India to US for a starter's pay of 60k, which is 5000$ a month. Lets say, after tax, he has 3500$ in hand. Most likely, he would share an apartment with one or more guys. Assuming he shares an apt costing 1200$ with 1 guy, his share would be 600$. Lets put his car loan at 500$. Lets put his food expenses at 500$. Assuming utility bills, cable, internet connection etc come out to be 200$, his share wud be 100$. So 600 + 500 + 500 + 100 = 1700$. 3500 - 1700 = 1800$. Lets say he spends another 300$ on personal enjoyment, he still has the potential to save 1500$ per month.

Soniya..

You can get what you are expecting with your experience.. In fact the company for which you were working in seepz is also recruiting massively in anticipation of a very big project and they are paying salary in that range..
One thing to note that.. most of the companies in India divide salary into two components.. viz. fixed and variable... obiviouly fixed is what you get in hand at every monthend.. and variable pay is paid at the end of quarter/ 6 months/ year depending on the company.. What percentage of variable pay you get depends on lot of factor.. your performance.. your groups performance.. your companies performance etc.. So when you get the offer letter you should read it carefully and the try to increase the fixed part as much as possible.

Big 5 companies.. accenture, IBM, Deloitte etc are paying a good sal in Mumbai also..

Cheers

Rohan

Soniya Saxena, I wrote above lines based on what I know. When I said "In IT industry no two persons will get same sal even though they are working for same company." that doesnt mean that you said that. If you didnt got the info which you are looking from my response, I am sorry for responding to your msg.

No, IBM doesn't have a software development facility in Mumbai.
