PHP developer want to shift to JSP, Struts

I have total 3+ years of experince in web programming from ASP to PHP and JSP.
Presently I am in Kolkata for US cliet as a PHP programmer. I am MSc Physics with Electronics specialistaion.
I want to shift to JSP/Servlet/Struts programming soon. Is it possible for me and what is the pay structure for a programmer like me in India?

I think there are few companies in Kolkata like TCG Software/Wipro etc which hire people having Java Skills.IMO,companies in Kolkata give relatively less salary as cost of living is lesser than other citites.
In which part of India will you be interested in relocating?

I am ready to relocate in B'lore in near future. I have good knowledge in Core Java, Servlet, JSP 1.2, JDBC, Java Bean. I am learning Struts and JSTL now. Can I get a suitable offer with my present skills?

Hi Sanjoy you have quite good experience and good qualification. Its easier for your to get job in good companies. In Kalkotta you can try TCS, HCL, CTS, IBM, PWC, Wipro, CATCG, RSystems, TCG, Skytech(I know only this big companies in Sector V, Salt Lake, Kalkotta). I heard Skytech, TCG have heavy requirement. There might be other companies too. If you are getting 4L per annum you can expect upto 6L per annum. As already you have 3+ yrs exp your technical and communications skills have more weight than your qualification.

For a JSP programmer, is it mandatory to know EJB, JMS and others? If so, what are the best books to learn these technologies?

Remember, I have good knowledge in Core Java, Servlet, JSP 1.2, JDBC, Java Bean and learning Struts and JSTL.

Some of the good books for EJB are
1. head first ejb - sierra and bates
2. mastering ejb - ed roman

its not mandatory to know ejbs for jsp programming. it depends on the architecture of your application. if your organization decides to use the services of a j2ee app server then ofcourse you gotta know ejb,jms etc.

but if its a simple jsp-struts-database kind of applicaiton, you dont need ejbs. however, knowledge of ejbs.jms doesnt hurt and its a good thing to have.

Currently many shops are hiring in Bangalore for the skills you mentioned.
Come here on Friday/Saturday/Sunday where many companies conduct walkins.

If you want to remain near Kolkata,you can apply at Infosys who is asking some employees to shift from Bangalore to Bhuvaneshwar.People are reluctant to move out!! .
Salary,its totally dependent on company and your profile match with it.If somebody want knowledge of GIS+Java+Struts and if you have all those skills then you are IN the next day!.

Nostalgia....
Visakhapatnam (Vizag for short) is my home town. It is definitely a beautiful place to live (beaches, resorts, parks, serenity and much more). The cost of living is not high at all. It was not ~3 years ago and I am sure it's the same now.
Cannot comment on the companies because I dont live there anymore. But yes, it's developing fast in the field of IT, I was told. The next big thing to happen after Hyderabad, in the state.

When people hear Vizag,first thing that comes to mind is Steel Plant .
IMO,Vizag has the potential of becoming growing city,especially in IT related services etc.
If govt. attracts the funds for development of second tier cities,people will definetely move from overcrowded cities and go to places like Vizag,Bhuvaneshawar,Kozhikode etc.
Yes,Vizag is not expensive,Rs 2000/month for 2 BHK is good.
