HTTP Status 500 - No Context configured to process this request

When I try to run a trivial JSP page, I get the following error in TOmcat 4.1
:
HTTP Status 500 - No Context configured to process this request

Can anyone throw light on how to solve this problem.

What is the URL you are trying to access?

I placed index.jsp in webapps/ROOT and tried to access it thru http://localhost:8080

That's strange. My TC 5.5 installation actually has an index.jsp at webapps/ROOT, and it is accessible just fine. Can you access other files (e.g. images) in that directory?

How much has this Tomcat installation been modified from the original?
As Ulf said, the standard installation has an index.jsp under ROOT - the first thing you should do after installing Tomcat is verify that this page displays.
