Hi, I just wanted to ask a question about the oil/energy industry/Oil Services, natural gas e.t.c. If as a Computer science graduate I applied for a Job at any of these types of companies, what could I say were the uses of computer software (both extremely complex and simple issues) at these companies. I would like to apply to companies like Schlumberger and LNG companies. Also, could it be a good idea to write some software to show my talents. If so, what kind of software is recommended? Thanks.

The type of work that you can expect in these companies could be predominantely based on Industrial Process automation(Similar to the work in companies like Yogogawa,ABB etc..)..You need to be strong in areas like electronics, control systems etc...
Another possibility could be development of software applications to manage its internal operations...
Heard that Schlumburger pays a very good package..It paid 9 lakh/annum for freshers from Pilani..
I have worked for a Propane dealer. The software I worked on took care of their business of purchasing, selling, storing of propane and other Natural Gas Products. The software also included logistics, accounting and trading activities. There were bunch of other applications like - another accounting app, IVR, some interfaces to third party software etc.
