Problem of Finding Max of Alphanumeric Primary Key

Hi All,
I need your Help Urgently. In my project I want to insert record to a table which have alphanumeric primary key.
(Eg. In M_Employee table Primary column Emp_no having records Emp001, Emp002 etc)
How Can i find the max of the that primary column. As my prject is Database independent So I cant take the help of the Database functions. I want to do it with Java,JDBC. Please Give me the solution as soon as posible.
