I understand that L&T pune is having good projects with lots of good technology, and above all they can offer short time onsite as well.
I have 4.5+ yrs of experience in J2EE tech and working IBM, I am missing techonology and onsite, so I am considering L&T. I have offer from some big shoot infy, wipro but still inclined towards L&T.
Another reason for considering cause my home is very near to L&T so I am looking for a long run, please advice me the truth about L&T infotech.

Also advice the work pressure, working env etc.

thanks in advance
Mohan

I think L&T has been pretty dormant in the IT industry. They have been there for years and not made any news. So I m not sure if you would like to go to such a company when you have other options.

Although, I am not completely sure of the kind of work you get at L&T. Even I would like to get some insights on that.

I guess you will find more of Mechanical Industry environment in L&T. Still 200 they did good in Mainframes related projects. Now again picking up and they are doing good. On site opportunites is ok not much, not less.

If I am in your position I will go for Infy. I feel L&t infotech is not a great company to ignore Infy offer what ever the reasons.

I have worked for L&T Infotech insurance sector before.. They are good and professional. They have good projects mostly in J2EE.
At the time of interview, if you have been promised for onsite opportunity, you will mostly get it.. They will try to honor the promise so as not to loose you. Everybody in L&T is worried about attrition and do their best to retain good people.

Hi Amitabh,

Thanks for your reply, Actually I was comparing L&T with big MNC like IBM, EDS, ACCENTURE they mostly have maint. support project which finally helps you if u will be there in that account for 2-3 yrs.And by that time you loss your technical touch.
but i feel in L&T things are not like that.
I ll be glad if you let me know the work pressure, specifically I am family man so prefer not work on sat-sunday at least with out need , but I do understand on weekdays people needs to work more as attrition rate is more and work is more, but, is that a basic culture. I had a bad experience in mid size company having over work load 9.30 to 11.30 even sat-sun.
Do they have any restriction on internet access like yahoo, msn, or personal mail, i hope atleast google search is allowed?? please let me know this things
I have a offer of ACC and EDS but I know there is only maint and support work.
So bit confused.

Why people hesitate to do maintenance and support work? Don't people learn while maintenance and supporting of projects? . As discussed earlier,if you want to do real things, avoid big companies and join startups. Many startups are are doing good work in Optical Netorking,Medical Imaging,Web Services, security etc.

If maint and support job is on pure j2EE then ok, but most of them are very old tech, and not granted if your r J2ee guy and work on j2ee, rather u end up with some other technology like smalltalk or something else. The basic principle of maint. support work is keep resource in billing.
Offcourse , if pur java/j2ee maint work is there then its equally same as development project.
so my point is good maint and support work will ok.

Hi,

The work-pressure is usually more as compared to other MNC companies, so are challanges. You might get a small team to lead and your team members may not be very experienced. You will need to code while guiding other people and take whole responsibility of the module/project. Sometimes it is a bit challenging and requires you to work more. You will see most of the people working late till 7 to 8:00 pm or so. (They take atleast 1 hour snacks/TT break though).
Having said that, nobody will force you to work late or on weekends. If you can manage your time, you can off by 6:00 pm. You can take breaks as you want or go back home/come again. The timings are flexible in practice (even though there is no official policy of flexible timings).
L&T Infotech pune office is much better in this aspect than any other offices.
It has been 2 years since I left pune, so I don't know if things have changed now, but I guess not.

I missed you question regarding internet access.

The internet access used to be restricted by username/password. Usually, every project gets a ID that allows all team members to access the internet from their desktop. I think, yahoo messenger/MSN, personal mails and objectional sites are blocked for those account. Google and all technical sites work. ( I am not sure about personal mails sites..)
Some people can get their own ID with unrestricted access. You need reason and manager's permission for that. I had such account, so it never bothered me..
Again, this is 2 years old information.. don't know if anything is changed.

I was wondering if L&T is paying you comparable to that of IBM/EDS/Infy.. They are not known as paymasters..

Well thanks a lot for your input, actually salary structure is not that good though. But its important to work with good technology that way i am considering and again my position will be also higher plus possibilities of on-sites are there.

Hi,

I worked with L&T for 1.5 yrs in US SBU. My personal opinion abt this company is not so good and i'll not recommend to join L&T.

The strong reason, I feel is, though it is a software company, they haven't come out of their factory work mentality yet..

Problems which i faced:-

1) No good work
2) Your seniors will be a big 0 in technolgy..most of them are transferred from L&T Ltd to L&T infotech.
3) You will get onsite opportunity if you have strong support...or u can say, if you have godfather.
4) If you resign from the company, they will realise ur importance and will promise u something out of this world. So its becoming a trend there to put down ur papers and gain what u want. And they call it as 'NORMAL PRACTICE'.
5) No flexi hours
6) Salary not as per the software industry standards.

and there are many more...

I was with them for 1.5 yrs. During this period, I worked on just 1 project that too was for L&T engineering division. There was nothing much happening in that project, still i was there for 1.5 yrs. After raising this situation with my seniors many times and getting false promises, I resigned from that company.

Grishma,

I wonder if you worked for L&T Infotech's pune office.. I had pretty good experience there.. My only issue was - Money !

Mohan, to your question - As a project leader, you get to lead the project - define/track project plan, do work allocation, customer conferences, provide technical guidance to team, do team members appraisal etc. Basically, you get to run your own show - depending upon the team members you get it, it is either pleasant experience OR nightmare..
My experience is that you do get credit of your good work.. I made many "godfathers" there and benefited...

Its am very thankful of all of you for the inputs, I think pune office is good but again they can't match the MNC environment because there was shortage of people as attrition rate is high, because of salary, As far as salary is concern they are trying to match it.
But I finally settled down with big MNC, and its seems to be good.

And one more thing, "Godfather" your senior or reporting person where ever you go..u have to keep a good relationship with him. This is the "Mantra". you have to keep him happy, atleast in india.
I got bad experience when I did my work, but not interacted with the Manager, it hit me badly...now learned the lesson. Will do no more mistake.

Can backfire sometimes. My previous godfather always had false promosises lined up for me. I realised it after some time and eventually had to quit the company.
